Compliance

  • Authority : Compliance is likely when when it come from an authority figure.
  • Commitment: Once when a request is complied to, other similar request are also likely to be complied.
  • Friendship: When a person is a friend or someone you like than compliance increases.
  • Reciprocity: If someone has done some good for you than you also feel obligated to return the favour.
  • Scarcity: Compliance due to lack of resources or information.
  • Social Validation: Person does not want to feel left out and wants to gain validation.

Obedience

  • Proximity - When the authority figure, which the experimenter, is far away, and the instruction are given by another person, the the obedience decreases substantially.
  • Location - When the experiment is shifted from the Yale University to an ordinary office, obedience slightly decreases.
  • Presence of authority figure - When the authority figure was present, the subjects were obedient, but when he was not present, the obedience decreased.
  • Other Participants - Milgram observed that when there were other participants in the room, obedience decreased.
  • Learner in another - If the learner was in the same room, the subject was less likely to obey the commands.
  • Other subject disobeying- If the subject saw another subject disobeying the commands of the experimenter, then they were more likely to disobey.

Conformity

  • Size of Majority: The more number of people in the majority group, the more chances that the person will conform.
  • Unanimity: If there was even one dissenter in the group, then chances of conforming fall down considerably.
  • Pubic response: When the responses are pubic, the person is more likely to conform to the group than when the responses are private.

Differences

Conformity is the process of giving in or yielding of the group pressure which involves change in belief or behaviour to fit in a group. Compliance is a from of conformity, but the difference is that in compliance, even though a person may not agree to a certain they still go along with it. Obedience is the process of yielding to a authority figure and their instructions, it is different in that it does not involve presuure from peers.
