What is the law of effect? What effect does it have on behavior?
Edward Thorndike, a renowned psychologist, developed 'the law of effect'. Thorndike, in the process of understanding the impact of learning on an organism's behaviour came up with the concept of law of effect. It suggests that, organisms are more likely to produce a behaviour that is followed by pleasant or positive consequences. On the other hand, organisms are likely to avoid behaviour that is followed by unpleasant consequences or experiences. Rewards and punishments have a major impact on organisms and helps in shaping behaviour.
The law of effect can be understood through an example which is exercised by most parents, in the day-to-day life. For instance, a child is told that he would be given a treat if only he picked up the toys and cleaned the room. The child is immediately down to business because he is aware that his certain behaviour will get rewarded. The law of effect yields desirable behaviour more often and negates undesirable behaviour.
