The TWO major types of Abstract art are the:

A: The active gestural style was done by “action painters” such as Jackson Pollock and Willem De Kooning who focused on gestures.

B: The passive “color-field” style by painters, notably Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman and Clyfford Still, who depicted with reflection and mood.

(b) Where and when did it get started?

Abstract art was created in France just before the turn of the 20th century.

(c) What is the difference between abstract and non-representational art?

Abstract art is the extreme, form of free expression; that nothing about the work has to represent anything - it can show just color, as well.

Representational means that the image will look very real – like when an ordinary person looking at the image will say that it looks real
