Positive reinforce and escape contingency are forms of operant conditions. Positive reinforce means to reinforce a behavior by rewarding it. In prison setting, the prisoners are often given additional privileges if they perform certain tasks well or rewarded if they maintain good behavior. Positive reinforcement is also used in the prison for the treatment of drug abuse and has proven to be effective.

Escape contingency or escape learning involves behaving in a certain way so as to escape an aversive stimulus, . Escape learning is a form of punishment. If a person engages in a fight with the other inmates or harms them, they may be kept in solitary confinement. As the solitary confine is not pleasant, the prisoner may improve their behavior, so as to escape the punishment.
