Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of observational data collection. Identify either a strength of observational data methods (and how this contrasts with a weakness of survey methods) or a weakness of observational data methods (and how this contrasts with a strength of survey methods).
A primary advantage of observational study is that observations
can be made in real life situations which allows the researcher to
study people behaving naturally. This may not be the case in a
survey as people are not always willing or share their own views or
are influenced by biases while responding. In addition,
observations provide more holistic data as researchers can access
to the context and meaning surrounding what people say and
do.
However, there are also some challenges associated with this
method. Because researchers are usually immersed in a situation or
culture during observations, their report can be highly subjective.
In contrast, the survey method involves a simplistic collection of
information that is not greatly influenced by the researcher.
Futhermore, observations can be highly time consuming and costly,
sometimes spanning over years together.
