Individuals are not born with prejudiced attitudes, rather, it is acquired during the process of socialization. Like all types of learning, prejudice may be acquired through the following processes:
1. Association: We may learn to a link social groups with undesirable characteristics such as poverty, illiteracy, crime, violence etc.
2. Reinforcement: The environment around us may reward us for prejudiced attitudes and behavior. For instance, expressing disgust against a particular ethnic group might be encouraged by one's parents/peers.
3. Modelling: By observing others around us showing prejudice, we may learn to imitate them.
