a closed society is where individuals have fixed roles and these roles and functions that they have, cannot be changed. All the individuals adhere to their roles and defined functions which have been decided at the time when the society was formed. An example of this is the caste system in the Hindus.

An open society is where there might occur exchange of roles with a change in time and situation within a society. These societies are known to be liberal as well as democratic in their though process.
