Answer #1

The tendency to stop recognizing stimuli in the environment that is unchanging is helpful because it narrows down the cognitive processes to only specific and relevant stimuli, thereby reducing the load on our information processing systems. For instance, if a student has to finish her assignment while there is a loud music being played by her neighbors, it would be hugely beneficial for her to disregard the background noise to focus solely on her work.

On the other hand, this tendency can also be unhelpful as we become fail to immediately recognize and respond to changes that occur gradually. For instance, the climate change has been taking place for almost a decade, but only after drastic events has it been raised as a critical issue.
