Tonya demonstrates personality traits at parties with her friends that are very different from those she exhibits when she participates in class activities. Using your knowledge of both the person-situation controversy and reciprocal determinism, explain why the variability of Tonya's behavior in different situations is not surprising.
Tonya's behavior is considered normal because she is acting in accordance to what the situation is calling for. In person-situation controversy, researchers continue to debate on whether the individual or if the situation is more influential in determining a person's particular behavior. According to reciprocal determinism an individual's behavior is affected by the individual himself as well as his immediate surrounding, and in turn, he also affects the surrounding he is in.
Tonya will not exhibit the same behavior as when she is in the disco as to when is participating in class activities. Her immediate environment is determining what action she is supposed to perform. On the other hand, her actions will also determine what kind of influence her environment will have on her.
