Michael, Sara, and Devon are in a really heated discussion about the ideology of oppression when it comes to race, class, and gender. Each stressing a different view of race, class and gender. You are only an ear shot away of their conversation and fortunately for the, you are a student studying social inequality. You hear comments such as; God made races, race is fictional, race is a construct, class is what you make of it, buying expensive items makes you a member of a class, Americans have false consciousness, sex and gender are the same thing, boys will be boys, girls will be girls, and girls are the weaker sex. You enter the conversation and give great sociological perspective on viewpoints heard. What you would have said?
Conflict perspective suggests that the society is in a perpetual conflict for the limited resources available where social order is maintained not through consensus but through domination. This would mean that the concepts of race, class and gender because those who own more resources have more power and those who have power dominate the society in return. In terms of race it’s socially constructed based on the skin color which was introduced by the majority race to dominate the minorities. When it comes to gender, it’s always the men dominated world that dominate women. This would mean that women are considered weak by the men who had more power because they were owning the economic means. Finally, when it comes to class, it’s the owners of the production that controls the means of production thus dominate the working class.
