If a test correlates .30 with driving performance and –.20 with academic performance, what is the differential validity and what is the moderator?

Answer #1

Differential validity refers to differences between subgroups in the validity coefficients (i.e., correlations between cognitive ability tests and job performance) for a cognitive ability test. Therefore in this case the dofferece between the two subgroups is -.10 which shows that it is the differtial validity.

The moderator  is a qualitative (e.g., sex, race, class) or quantitative (e.g., level of reward) variable that affects the direction and/or strength of the relation between an independent or predictor variable and a dependent or criterion variable. Specifically within a correlational analysis framework, a moderator is a third variable that affects the zero-order correlation between two other variables. In this case AGE could be the moderator that holds themediating variables that is the driving performance and the academic performance.
