chapter 8, Shaping is an important part of how to teach a new behavior. What is an example of a behavior that may require shaping? What role does differential reinforcement play in shaping this new behavior? Does punishment come into play in this process? Why or why not?
A child is not showing much interest in playing with a ball, so to make him play, he is praised whenever he holds the ball in the hand, but if he drops the balls he is not encouraged, then when he throws the ball he is praised again. this goes on till the child starts to play with the ball . Here, whenever the boy has the ball, then only playing with the ball is encouraged, and if he just holds the ball, the behavior is is not reinforced, so this differential reinforcement teaches him that he must play with the ball. Punishment is not required in shaping as shaping relies on deferential reinforcement.
