Zen emphasizes on learning from heart that is not using the physical self but the inner self.When the learning and knowledge flows from the inner self enlightenment occurs (wisdom or Bodhi) that leads the person on the way of righteousness (Dharma) ,thus the person is on

the righteous way of wisdom Bodhidharma. Wakaun may have attained this enlightenment and hence, Bodhidharma is reflected in him,and the beard representing the physical appearance or physical self is diminished and he sees the reflection of Bodhidharma in him.
