Describe the relationship between intentional teaching and developmentally appropriate practice.
In the learning environment, intentional teaching refers to predetermined or conscious teaching. Planning of what to teach and inclusion of goals to improve learning are important aspects of intentional teaching. It can help children develop skills, habits of mind or information that they could not by themselves. Specific learning goals for children’s development are very important part of intentional teaching. Now here comes the importance of developmentally appropriate practice. Without the knowledge of these practices one cannot indulge in intentional teaching because one does not have the information on what is appropriate to be taught to a particular age group of children for example. Developmentally appropriate practice suggests teachers to make decisions everyday based on their knowledge of child development, taking into consideration individual learning differences and social and cultural influences. It should meet the cognitive, emotional, and physical needs of children.
