You have been discussing PSYC350 with a friend who says, “sleep is an “off” state for the brain when nothing happens.” Please discuss this statement, do you agree with this statement? Defend you point of view with some examples from the book or our discussions in class. Your answer should include a discussion of sleep, pointing out key aspects of brain activity during sleep that strongly suggests a significant functional role for sleep.
Sleep may be defined as a natural state of bodily rest seen in
humans and many animals and is essential for survival. It is
different from wakefulness in that the organism has a
decreased
ability to react to stimuli, but this is more easily
reversible
than in hibernation or coma.
Functions of sleep:
Sleep is not iust a part of the day when brain switches off, infact brain in active while its sleeping and its electrical activity can be recorded with an EEG along with other methods like ecg, eog, emg which shows two types of sleep NREM and REM sleep.
