Answer #1

Sleep may be defined as a natural state of bodily rest seen in humans and many animals and is essential for survival. It is different from wakefulness in that the organism has a decreased
ability to react to stimuli, but this is more easily reversible
than in hibernation or coma.

Functions of sleep:

  • Recovery of physical and psychological strength
  • Restoration: repair, wound healing, immune system function, correction of metabolic disturbances, and temperature regulation
  • Energy conservation
  • Preservation: allows animals to remain silent and hidden when at risk from predation
  • Discharge of emotions
  • Memory consolidation

Sleep is not iust a part of the day when brain switches off, infact brain in active while its sleeping and its electrical activity can be recorded with an EEG along with other methods like ecg, eog, emg which shows two types of sleep NREM and REM sleep.
