According to the James Lange theory of emotion when we witness an external stimulus leading to a physiological response. How we interpret those physical reactions controls our emotional reaction to the physiological response. For example, someone was walking in the woods, and he saw a grizzly bear. He began to tremble, and his heart began to race. The James-Lange theory proposes that we will interpret the physical reactions and conclude that this person was frightened.
