Item response theory is a paradigm for the design,analysis and scoring of tests, questionaires and similar instruments measuring abilities, attitudes or other variables. it is a theory of testing based on the relationship between individuals performance on a test tem and the test takers levels of performance on an over all measures of the ability that item was designed to measure.

In item response theory models individual responses to items b estimating individual ability (Theta) and item difficulty model.

Theta is the strength of the latent trait or ability level of a particular individual. On an IQ test higher Theta would represent higher intelligence. On a measurement of anxiety Higher Theta would reflect higher anxiety level.
