1. At 186B, Eryximachus develops an extended similie between love and medicine (and lots of other things). Explain the similie, focusing on the idea of balancing opposites.
2. What makes one an expert at medicine, according to Eryximachus? What makes one an expert lover? Can you think of any important differences between doctors and lovers?
According to Eryximachus, the body manifests two type of love, one is health and another is the disease. His explanation towards love and medicines seems to be hypothetical rather than real, the contemporary literature describes Plato’s philosophical ideas for human emotions and feelings so that the symposium of Plato does not create a correlation between love and medicine but the hypothetical idea of Eryximachus created a strong correlation between love and health.
According to Eryximachus, medicine is the science of effect of love on repletion and depletion of the body. Physicians must be able to distinguish Love that is noble form Love that is disgraceful and their task is to establish mutual love between body’s elements. In other words, guided by love, medicine seeks to create harmony in the human body.
