Outline the main components of person-centered theory that contribute to personality development.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The person-centered theory holds that recognizing the innate potential to grow in each client is key to their personality development. For change to occur in a positive direction, it is imperative that clients are provided with warmth, empathy and unconditional positive regard. The theory also holds that therapists should be as non-directive as possible and should instead follow the client’s lead whenever possible. The role of the therapist is to create an environment of trust and support, providing guidance when necessary so that client themselves discover the most optimal solutions for themselves.
