Why did Thomas Jefferson fear that democracy could not tolerate the extremes of wealth and poverty? Do you agree with him?
Thomas Jefferson feared that democracy could not tolerate extremes of wealth and poverty, primarily because the minority privileged would be driven by arrogance and the minority impoverished by desperation to maximise their personal interests while ignoring that of the larger public. I am not in complete agreement with this idea as democracy as a system of government is the rule of the majority. Therefore, representatives that come to power are those that are supported by the larger population. In this case, minorities of extreme wealth and poverty would not be able to yield sufficient political power.
