Why is ethnocentrism a more central issue for the cross-cultural study of morality than for most of the other topics ?
Ethnocentrism refers to one treating and valuing one’s own cultural beliefs, practices and customs as superior while ignoring others as inferior. This would mean that when people evaluate the cultures of others, they would base their own culture without considering the background of the culture in evaluation which would lead them to brand those cultural practices as not appropriate or appreciable. Thus, when it comes to cross-cultural study, people with ethnocentric beliefs may not be able to see the good things in other cultures.
