Difference between Ascribed and Achieved status. Do you have achieved or ascribed status? How it impact your life.
Ascribed status refers to the status that’s assigned to someone because of their socio-economic standing in terms of race, religion, gender, wealth etc. in the society which is beyond one’s control. An ascribed status may act as an advantage for some while it remains a disadvantage for others. An achieved status refers to a status in the society which one earned through one’s hard work. This would mean it’s entirely in the control of the person who achieves such status. I have an achieved status because even though I hail from a humble family, I was able to make it to the higher education and my parents were able to support me through their hard work without gaining any privilege from the society for what they are.
