Stereotypes are everywhere and can hurt/hinder an individual's line of communication. In this exercise I want you to think along the phrase "never judge a book by it's cover". Perhaps you know someone that has been affected negatively by stereotypes or this could be yourself. How could this affect the communication process? How did it affect the relationship with that person(s)?
Stereotypes involve drawing conclusions about entire groups of people based on common assumptions. Poorly informed stereotypes can lead us to tailor and distort our communication. As a result, the message may not be properly delivered to the receiver and if the receiver feels that they are being stereotyped, they may not take the message as it is as. This can have a direct impact on the relationship with the individual, as the receiver may feel uncomfortable communicating honestly with those who they perceive as aggressive or uncooperative based on stereotypes. In addition, the receiver may respond differently to someone with positive stereotypes than another with negative stereotypes. This can create more barriers in effective communication.
