Missile gap refers to the imagined fear of the US after Russia tested the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile and the Sputnik missile in 1957. US officials also feared that Russia was also building more nuclear weapons, so, they urged the government to increase the number of missiles and build more nuclear weapons. During that time, US had more than 100 missiles while Russia had 10 to 25 missiles. This information was confirmed to the then US Presidential candidate John. F. Kennedy by the CIA and the same was confirmed by the former President Dwight D. Eisenhower who was the president during the missile gap issue arose.
