Discuss and describe the five stages of personality development from Freud’s perspective. With which stage do you agree with most? With which do you agree with least? Be sure to substantiate and support your response.
Answer. Freud gave the psychosexual model and suggested five stages of personality development :-
Oral Stage (0-1 year)
In the main phase of personality development, the libido is focused in a child's mouth. It gets much fulfillment from putting a wide range of things in its mouth to fulfill the libido, and hence its id requests. Which at this phase in life are oral, or mouth orientated, for example, sucking, biting, and breastfeeding.
Freud said oral incitement could prompt an oral fixation in later life. We see oral identities surrounding us, for example, smokers, nail-biters, finger-chewers, and thumb suckers. Oral identities participate in such oral practices, especially when under pressure.
Anal Stage (1-3 years)
The libido presently winds up concentrated on the rear-end, and the child gets extraordinary delight from pooping. The child is currently completely mindful that they are a man in their own privilege and that their desires can carry them into struggle with the requests of the outside world (i.e., their inner self has created).
Freud trusted that this sort of contention tends to reach a critical stage in potty training, in which grown-ups force limitations on when and where the child can poo. The idea of this first clash with expert can decide the child's future association with all types of specialist.
Early or unforgiving potty training can prompt the child turning into an anal-retentive personality who despises mess, is fanatically clean, dependable and conscious of expert. They can be resolute and tight-fisted with their money and belonging. This is altogether identified with delight got from clutching their excrement when little children, and their mum's at that point demanding that they dispose of it by putting them on the potty until the point when they perform!
Not as foolish as it sounds. The anal expulsive, then again, experienced a liberal latrine training administration amid the anal stage. In adulthood, the anal expulsive is the individual who needs to impart things to you. They like giving things away. Generally, they are 'sharing their s**t'!' An anal-expulsive personality is likewise muddled, disordered and defiant.
Phallic Stage (3 to 5 or 6 years)
Affectability presently ends up amassed in the genitals and masturbation (in both genders) turns into another wellspring of joy. The child ends up mindful of anatomical sex contrasts, which gets under way the contention between suggestive fascination, disdain, competition, envy and dread which Freud called the Oedipus complex (in young men) and the Electra complex (in young ladies).
This is settled through the procedure of distinguishing proof, which includes the child receiving the attributes of a similar sex parent.
Latency Stage (5 or 6 to puberty)
No further psychosexual development happens amid this stage (inert means covered up). The libido is torpid. Freud felt that most sexual driving forces are quelled amid the idle stage, and sexual vitality can be sublimated (re: barrier instruments) towards school work, pastimes, and fellowships.
A significant part of the child's vitality is diverted into growing new abilities and obtaining new information, and play turns out to be to a great extent bound to other children of a similar sexual orientation.
Genital Stage (puberty to grown-up)
This is the last phase of Freud's psychosexual hypothesis of personality development and starts in puberty. It is a period of youthful sexual experimentation, the fruitful determination of which is settling down in an adoring balanced association with someone else in our 20's. Sexual instinct is coordinated to hetero delight, as opposed to self-joy like amid the phallic stage.
For Freud, the correct outlet of the sexual instinct in grown-ups was through hetero intercourse. Fixation and strife may keep this with the outcome that sexual corruptions may create.
For instance, fixation at the oral stage may bring about a man increasing sexual joy essentially from kissing and oral sex, instead of intercourse.
According to me The most appropriate stage defined by Freud is the Oral stage in which the child’s actions are intended towards his or her mouth. In real life if we notice new horns , they always suck their thumb or hand and whatever we give them they first take it to their mouth . For them to experience and sense something it has to be first taken to the mouth always. It is a way they make sense of the world around them.
According to Freud in the anal stage the child’s whole focus is on his or her anal region . I don’t actually believe in that because during that phase the child shows other behaviours as well . Of course anal focus is there but apart from that there are other reflexes that were missing in the theory of Freud .
