If we go back 75 years ago, Japan wanted to become a more powerful Country bu there were certain resources which they didn't have prevented them from doing so.
Japanese wanted to take control over the rest of Asia and Pacific for their requirements. So they started invading Asian countries like China, Indo China(French) etc
Seeing Japan invading these places the US decided to do something to prevent Japan. They passed many economic sanctions on Japan including trade embargoes.
So in order to defend the status of rising world power Japan had to plan an attack on US military base.
