Answer #1

Advantages of Federalism

  1. Federalism makes way for diversity .By allocating power to state and local government; the state can solve the issues pertaining to their region without having the national government being involved in the matter. The state government will have a better understanding of the local issue than the national government. If Washington gets involved in every state issue, it will become a national issue which will be time consuming, less effective and expensive
  2. Federalism allows every state to adopt independent policies which will cater to the unique interests and requirements of the state rather than imposing a uniform law to all the states which may not work or be beneficial for all the states.
  3. Federalism allows the citizens to decide many things at the state and local levels of government and avoid battling over single national policies to be applied uniformly throughout the country
  4. Federalism disposes power. By distributing the power across different bodies, it is considered as protection against tyranny
  5. Federalism gives more individual an opportunity to participate in political matters. Almost a million people play a role in the political office in counties, special and districts. The local leaders are more connected with the citizens of the state than Washington. A public poll revealed that the local government was more effective and manageable than the national government

Disadvantages of Federalism

  1. Federalism Creates inequalities in different states. Example, education fund may not be the same in every state, as the state government decides on these issues which will cause some states to spend more and other states to spend less.
  2. It Creates confusion because the different levels of government make it difficult for citizens to know what different governments are doing
  3. Federalism had a history of protecting slavery and segregation. Slavery was a state issue which could not be dealt as a national issue or through national policies.
