Gender socialization is the regarded as the process of educating and instructing individuals how should ideally behave based on their gender.
The most common gender categories are male and female, and gender is regarded by many as binary. In fact, social norms oppose identifying with a gender that is not strictly male or female. However, there is an increasing recognition that much our everyday behaviour arises from gendered patterns of interaction with our family, peers and the media. These are the primary agents of socialization and through them, we pick up on subtle cues that inform us about acceptable actions.
