Listening includes receiving nonverbal messages.

While active listening refers to the act of hearing something with full attention, it also includes comprehension of nonverbal cues from the sender’s end. To understand this we can take an example of a situation where a therapist is taking the session with his client and he observed that while the client is smiling while telling a particular life event, he or she is struggling to hide their emotions, understanding these non verbal cues from the client will help the therapist to identify that this might be a pressure point of anxiety for the client which can be integrated further.
