The advantages and disadvantages of having so many levels of sub-national governments in the United States includes the fact that a federal system creates two levels of government having the capacity to take action, in case of the failure to attain the desired policy goal at one level we can offset this by successfully securing the support of elected representatives at another level. This leads the individuals, groups, and social movements to be encouraged to actively participate and helping shape public policy. Thus the democracy becomes more vibrant. Federalism has certain drawbacks such as the economic disparities across states, race-to-the-bottom dynamics due to which the states compete to attract business by lowering taxes and regulations, thus the national interest is compromised. There is difficulty in taking action on issues of national importance.
