A death squad is an armed group that conducts extrajudicial killings or forced disappearances of persons for the purposes of political repression, genocide, or revolutionary terror.

The rise of death squads dates back to many decades to the Bolshevik Cheka as a part of the Red Terror in Russia and then during the American cold war. It developed as a reaction to revolutionary terrorism stating that as their existence is threatened death squads are a means of protection.
