Mental disorders are characterized by significant impairment in one's cognition which affects his thinking, behaviour and mood. The psychological disorder which I would least likely want to experience is clinical depression. The American Psychological Association (APA) published the Diagnostic Statistical Manual for mental disorders (DSM). The DSM consists of axis which includes all the form of mental disorders. The DSM must be referred to match the criteria of symptoms of a particular disorder, based on the criteria and the symptoms, the clinician diagnosis an individual with a certain disorder. Clinical depression is also known as major depression and the diagnostic term for it is, major depressive disorder. In the DSM, under major depressive disorder, the symptoms and criteria mentioned for diagnosis are as follows:

  • Depressed mood every single day accompanied by feelings of hopelessness, loneliness, irritable mood.
  • Diminished pleasure in activities which were once pleasurable.
  • Sleeping too much or barely sleeping.
  • Significant weight loss or weight gain.
  • Fatigue.
  • Excessive feelings of inappropriate guilt.
  • Feelings and thoughts of death or suicide.
