According to the Terror Management Theory, people exhibit self-protective emotional and cognitive responses such as adhering more strongly to their cultural worldview and prejudices when they are confronted with reminders of death or sense of self-esteem. This adhering strongly to the cultural worldview and prejudices leads to racism and intergroup conflict as people are not inclusive and tolerant. For example; terrorist attacks by one racial group lead to the promotion of further prejudices and racial discrimination.
