In strain theory, strain occurs when there is difference between one's goals and reality.To adapt an idividual may choose Conformity- cultural belief of hardwork bringing success ,Innovation - goals through socially unapproved means, Ritualism- socially approved means with strumict rulrs but losing sight of goal, Retreat- give up on their goals or any means of sucess or rebellion.

Joe's example is of conformity since he has a clear goal of supporting his family and is following a culturally approved way of fulfilling it.
