A study by Gomes and Grace (2017) reported that adolescent stress maybe a critical factor in th development of schizophrenia. The researchers observed that stressors during adolescence in normal rats leads to deficits in adults that are similar to those seen in schizophrenia patients. Furthermore, when the threshold for stress tolerance was reduced, these deficit states were induced when the rats tested as adults. Therefore, it was concluded that the predisposition to stress hyper-responsivity, or exposure to substantial stressors, during adolescence lead to the development of a schizophrenia-like profile in adults.
