What is your take on ego defense when it comes to clincal psychology? in 150 words or more

Ego defense mechanisms perform the function of protecting the mind/self/ego from anxiety or social sanctions or providing a refuge from a situation with which we are unable to cope with currently. This mechanism makes the good things feel better for the individual. For example; repression takes place when we place uncomfortable thoughts in relatively inaccessible areas of the subconscious mind and it happens when things occur that we are unable to cope with now, we push them away, either planning to deal with them at another time or hoping that they will fade away on their own accord.
