Instrumental learning or operant conditioning can be defined as a learning process in which a reinforcing srimuli is paired with a behavior or response leading to change in behavior.

A. Example of instrumental learning is appreciation of a child after he performs well in tests.

B. Primary reinforcers are biological reinforces such as food, pleasure,drinks etc. Secondary reinforcers are human reinforcers such as appreciation, tokens, grades etc. In the above example the reinforcer is secondary.

C. The incentive value of the reinforcer can be increased by pairing appreciation with tokens.
