Did Maslow believe that most people would eventually become self-actualized?
According to Maslow, self-actualization occurs when individuals maximize their potential, doing the best that they are capable of doing. Individuals could attain self-actualization only when their other lower needs were met. In Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the lowest level is physical needs that must be met and the second level includes the security of the supply of the things that fill those needs. This immediately restricts self-actualization to those who have good fortune. Although we are all, theoretically, capable of self-actualizing, most of us will not do so, or only to a limited degree. Maslow estimated that only one-two percent of people would reach the state of self-actualization.
