write about your ageist thoughts. Do you think ageism is a legitimate issue that needs to be addressed in society or is just a politically correct concern? How might such stereotyping affect those in late adulthood
Ageism is stereotyping and discriminating against individuals or groups on the basis of their age. It may be casual or systematic.
As far as the question of my thoughts on ageism is concerned, I would say it is too real. Having worked in diverse work cultures and work environments I came across different cases of Ageism on a frequent basis. It happens to the young and old. In my experience, most employers prefer not to work with older or 50+ people. Even once out of job, it is very difficult for older people to get a job again. Much of this is due to the many assumptions placed upon them: overqualified (ie. will want a high salary), will leave the company within a few years to retire, and they aren't teachable.
Yes, the issue of Ageism is very legitimate and it should be addressed in the society. No person shall be discriminated on the basis of age, race, sex, etc.It is a clear cut violation of civil rights and the issue should be addressed appropriately.
Such type of stereotypes and predetermined thoughts about older people might affect them adversely. In the late adulthood stage, These people may suffer from depression, loneliness after being rejected or not being accepted in the society. They may also suffer from various mental disorders .
