Homework Answers

Answer #1

When it comes to formulating “safer cigarettes” several controversies arise. Firstly, there are several tobacco companies claiming to produce less harm harmful product, without any scientific evidence. In fact, some retrospective studies find that these specialised products are no less harmful to the smoker. Secondly, the tobacco industry has a major interest in promoting their products as safe, in order to boost their sales. The claims they make with respect to the product may well be exaggerated in order to benefit their motives. Another issue that stems from this lies within the behaviours of the individual itself. Perceiving that one is smoking a cigarette deemed to be safe is not likely to reduce smoking, and may, in turn, increase it.
