Latest research shows that pedophiles have been sexually abused in childhood iin a great many cases. Status as a sex offender in general was not related to childhood abuse.

Garland and Dougher in 1990 have coined the term`the abused abuser theory' but the best known psychotherapist are Groth and Burgess who are the prominent proponents of this theory. The main problem with this theory is that they are self reports which may not be that reliable.

Investigations later indicated that sexual abuse in childhood by an adult female or male was significantly more offen reported by pedophilic sex offenders against children than by controls who erotically prefer physically mature females. However nonpedophilic sex offenders against children did not differ from any other group. Hence the abused abuser theory holds some weightage.
