How can I use this topic in a study or experiment scenario: there is a linkage between child abuse and adolescent dating violence? I did some research, the articles suggest abuse occurring during childhood can lead to adolescent dating violence in middle school to high school. Creating either the perpetrator in the relationship, or the victim. I think I should narrow my study to child abuse leading to the perpetrator in the adolescent relationship. Although, how could I set this experiment up? For example, interview couples with a Questionnaires? Although, how would I get an independent and dependent variable? Like how could I test one group and a second group, in order to learn if the hypothesis is accurate? I like the topic, but I am having a hard time determining how the experiment should go for my psychology class. Thank you for your help.
You cannot conduct an experiment because both of these variables cannot be manipulated. At best, you can conduct a correlational study. To measure childhood abuse, you can make use of The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire or any other such instrument. You should use a scale for adolescent dating violence as well, because you need numerical data to calculate the relationship between the variables. Now, if you choose your sample to comprise of only adolescents, you need to just measure dating violence. This can be done using The Dating Violence Questionnaire or any other such tool. My only concern is how honest people will be about answering these questions. Especially because they are adolescents.
