Before rules and regulations were enforced with respect to research and the ethics of research, there was quite a lot of malpractice and unethical methodologies employed on human subjects that left a jarring impact. This has definitely changed the view of many with respect to the way research is conducted.
Current regulations do protect human violation to quite an extent, it was put into place after previous researchers had failed to do so (example Stanford prison experiments, amongst many others).
However there are areas that still have the prevalence of abuse, such examples can be seen when people with cognitive or biological deficits are being studied or people with certain disorders who aren't able to speak or defend on their own behalf. In terms of violation of human rights, research has come a long way but there is still a long way to go.
