In sociology and gender studies, "doing gender" is the cocept that describes the socialisation of gender identity in Western culture as opposed to the classical view of gender and sex as innate predetermined quality of individuals.

The idea was first proposed by West and Zimmerman (1987) to highlight that gender is a psychologically ingrained social construct that actively surfaces in everyday human interaction and is the degree to which an actor is masculine or feminine based on societal expectations about what is appropriate for one's sex category.
