Punishment is the change in the environmental settings of an individual which results in the reduction of the likelihood of an undesired behaviour from happening. Punishment can be both positive or negative in nature. Punishment involves removal of a factor which influences the behaviour. The use of reinforcement is preferred over punishment in general life however for correction facilities punishment is a good alternative for the reduction of undesired behaviour amongst inmates.
