Why were Americans so interested in Santa Fe and why was the Spanish, and later Mexican, government so resistant to opening the city and region to trade with the United States?

Spain colonized America because they wanted to build their empire, create additional trading ports and routes, expand their military control and convert the native peoples to their religious beliefs.

Americans, Spanish, and Mexican were interested in Santa Fe because this place was great to trade center and mineral land which made Spanish, and American to the center of interest.

Juan de Onate led an expedition into New Mexico. His goal was to find gold and convert natives to Christianity and to establish a permanent colony. He never found gold but he did establish Spain’s first settlement in the region of Santa Fe.
