1. Template: For instance, the first time Yana saw a cat, she formed a template in her mind for what a cat looks like. She formed a separate template the first time she saw a dog.

2. Prototype: For instance, Yana has never seen a Siamese cat before but because she knows that cats tend to be furry, four-legged, small sized animals with ears and a tail, she is able to recognise one.

3. Feature pattern recognition: For example, Yana sees the cat's fur, paws, whiskers, ears, and tail and concludes that she is perceiving a cat.
