Analyze the functions and dysfunctions of the McDonaldization of higher education. Provide a specific example of how higher education is McDonaldized for each of the dimensions of McDonaldization.
The theory of mcdonaldisation had been developed by George ritzer. This theory states that there would be a tendency of people in western culture to rationalise or mcdonaldise different processes. People like to follow patterns or smaller steps. As a result of rationalisation, there occurs task compartmentalisation at different levels, for specialisation of skills making people better at the job they would be performing. In a perfect mcdonalised environment , labour would be cheap and there would be greater efficiency in production.
In areas of higher rationalisation, there was high development. Many years ago, teaching had become a for profit organisation, where, teachers are not allowed to teach the children in the manner that they would want. Teachers would only be following a set rubric,. Quality wouldn’t matter, even in the classes or the assignments. Just as a student would complete the classes, they would earn a degree.
In traditional universities, the professors would not look for quantity but quality, writing a summary about a child and if it would be recommendable for them to move to another class. Earlier, people like to gather knowledge and learn, what was important was the information and the quality of knowledge and not the marks that a child would score.
The rationalisation of higher studies was due to the demand of the faculty as well as campus resources. This has led to changes in education from quality to quantity. The rate of students who graduated came down. The universities have wanted to increase the number of student to accommodate losses.
Rationalisation in universities took place through professors who are highly specialised having vast expertise intne different topics. There occurred a decrease inthe frequencies of student assessment as well as teaching, along with removal of any of the subjective courses that would require the child to be gauging in material comprehension.
The function and dysfunction of rationalisation of higher education is engaging in published research, controlled process of labour,
