If you were a Functionalist Theorist, how would you explain the rise in divorce rates over the past several decades? How does this relate to the functions of marriage over time?

High rates of divorces over the past several decades can be related to the functions of marriage dynamics which have changed over time. Few decades ago, one of the partners, mostly women, were dependent on the other partner for financial resources While both the partners are interdependent on each other in terms of social and moral support. In the past few decades the position of women in working environment has changed drastically and now we can find of a raised number in the number of women working in all kinds of jobs which help them become independent of their partners for financial stability.. This was one of the reasons why there was more tolerance in the past decades between married couples. It was also related with the prevalence of domestic violence by masculine gender on the opposite gender.
