The juvenile gang problem is rampant in Houston. The Sheriff has said it is not just drugs that are causing the problem, nor is it something that enforcement can really deal with, but that something else must be done. He has asked you to do some research that will help him come up with some solutions to the problems of drugs and gangs in Houston. The media are already suggesting that “social programs” must received more funding, but money is scarce. Moreover, the research will help them decide where to spend these scarce dollars most effectively. There is $100,000 available (confiscated drug money) to do the research and the study must be completed in one year. Answer the following questions:
a. What research questions would you ask? Or, how would you frame the problem?
b. How would you design your study in order to most effectively answer the questions (in “a” above)?
Indicate where you will expect to find the answers to your questions. Indicate the types of data collection you would do and why you would use that method (or methods)?
What kinds of problems might you anticipate in this research?

Answer #1

I would have been asked about the main issues and causes related to drugs because it is harmful to the people. I would frame the question with the help of research and finding out the solutions to deal with the major issues. It is important to ask them about the total expenditure require for the social programs and to resolve the issues of gangs present in Houston.

I would prefer both quantitative and qualitative research methods to resolve the problems and to gather more information. In this research study, many problems can come regarding the budget and availability of proper resources. With the help of surveys and interview we can carry out the research easily and it will help t depict the solution of many issues. In addition, we can gain more information from official sites and other websites by using the internet.
